Cole Palmer makes English Premier League history with 12th consecutive penalty

Chelsea forward Cole Palmer set a new English Premier League record on Sunday after scoring two penalties in his side’s thrilling 4-3 comeback victory against Tottenham. Palmer, 22, made history by converting 12 consecutive penalties in the league without missing, surpassing the previous record of 11 set by Manchester City’s Yaya Touré, according to Opta.

Palmer’s second penalty was particularly memorable. In the 84th minute, he calmly executed a ‘Panenka’ — a cheeky chipped penalty down the middle of the goal, a technique popularized by Czech football legend Antonín Panenka. When I put the ball down and stepped back, I knew what I was going to do, Palmer said after the match. “I thought it was late in the game and a bit crazy, so I just went for it.

Since leaving Manchester City for Chelsea in 2023, Palmer has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young talents in world football. With 33 goals and 17 assists in just 48 league appearances for Chelsea, he has been instrumental in the team’s rise to second in the Premier League table. In the match against Tottenham, Palmer not only scored twice from the spot but also provided an assist, showcasing his all-around game.

Chelsea’s performance, however, did not start off smoothly. Tottenham capitalized on defensive mistakes to take a 2-0 lead within the first 11 minutes. Despite the early setbacks, Chelsea responded well, with Jadon Sancho pulling a goal back in the 17th minute. Palmer then equalized in the second half after Yves Bissouma fouled Moisés Caicedo in the box, giving Palmer the chance to level the scores with a penalty.

Chelsea continued to press and took the lead in the 73rd minute when Enzo Fernández scored following a clever assist from Palmer, who dribbled through multiple defenders before the ball fell to the Argentine. Palmer sealed the win with his second penalty, although Tottenham’s Son Heung-min scored a late goal to make it 4-3.

The victory leaves Chelsea just four points behind league leaders Liverpool, although they have played one more match. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca played down talk of a title challenge, focusing instead on the team’s ongoing development. My message to the players was to focus day by day and improve with each game, Maresca said.
