The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced former President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, as the winner of the 2024 presidential election. The declaration was made despite the absence of results from nine constituencies, which the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, clarified would not influence the overall outcome of the election. Speaking at a press conference, Mensa assured Ghanaians that the EC’s decision was based on collated results from 267 constituencies, representing the majority of votes cast. According to her, even if the results from the remaining constituencies were added to the closest contender’s tally, it would not change the overall winner. She emphasized that the will of the people, as expressed through the ballot, had been respected.
Based on the results received, John Mahama secured a total of 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the valid votes cast. His closest rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 4,657,304 votes, which accounts for 41.61%. The EC reported a total of 18,774,159 registered voters, of which 11,430,531 participated in the election. Out of these, 11,191,422 votes were deemed valid, while 239,109 ballots were rejected. The voter turnout for the election was calculated at 60.9%, showcasing a significant level of civic engagement. Jean Mensa also assured Ghanaians that the EC would continue to provide updates once the results from the nine outstanding constituencies are available.
This victory marks a triumphant return to the presidency for John Mahama, who has previously served as Ghana’s leader. The declaration has been met with mixed reactions across the political spectrum, with celebrations among NDC supporters and reflective assessments by members of the ruling NPP. The announcement also comes amid growing calls for political stakeholders to maintain peace and respect the democratic process. As the nation moves forward, the EC’s commitment to transparency and timely updates will remain critical to ensuring trust in the electoral process. This election underscores Ghana’s enduring democracy, where citizens exercise their right to choose leaders who represent their vision for the nation’s future.
