Asantes in NPP Push for Name, Symbol, and Flag Change – Dr. Amoako Baah
Dr. Amoako Baah, a renowned political scientist and a prominent figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has revealed discussions among the party’s Asante faction to rebrand the party as the “New Patriotic Force.” He shared this information during an exclusive interview with Captain Smart on ONUA TV, citing dissatisfaction among Asantes within the party as a driving factor behind the proposed changes.
According to Dr. Baah, the decision to push for rebranding stems from feelings of neglect and alienation that have grown among Asantes since Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo assumed the presidency. He explained that many members feel sidelined, contributing to the party’s declining unity and recent electoral defeat.
“The NPP lost this election because of economic mismanagement and Nana Addo’s arrogance. Many members of the party feel alienated and sidelined,” Dr. Baah stated. He identified these issues as the primary reasons for the party's failure in the general election.
Dr. Baah also directed criticism at Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer, accusing him of contributing to the party’s decline. “Bawumia allowed himself to be used as a tool to destroy the party,” he lamented. Additionally, he condemned the conduct of Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), specifically referencing NAPO’s controversial comments about Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Despite the calls for a name change, Dr. Baah assured that the party’s traditional colors would remain, albeit with minor adjustments. However, he disclosed that the iconic elephant symbol, long associated with the NPP, would be replaced with a new emblem as part of the rebranding effort.
Dr. Baah's remarks have sparked discussions about the future of the NPP and the challenges it faces in regaining the trust of its members and the Ghanaian electorate. The proposed changes aim to address grievances within the party, particularly among the Asante faction, and to rebuild the party’s image following its electoral defeat.
The rebranding initiative reflects broader concerns about the party’s current trajectory under its leadership and policies. As the NPP navigates internal divisions and seeks to redefine its identity, the success of these efforts will likely determine its ability to reconnect with its base and remain a significant force in Ghana’s political landscape.
