John Mahama won the 2024 Elections with 56.55%, and Bawumia Defeated with 41.61%
Ghana’s Electoral Commission has officially declared John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as the winner of the 2024 presidential election. Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes, which represents 56.55% of the total valid votes cast, defeating his primary opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 4,657,304 votes, or 41.61%. Other candidates combined earned 205,721 votes, accounting for 1.84%.
The election saw a voter turnout of 60.9%, with 11,191,422 valid votes recorded out of the total ballots cast. However, there were also 239,109 rejected ballots, highlighting the importance of continued voter education to ensure all votes are counted properly.
Mahama’s victory was bolstered by strong performances in regions such as Volta, Upper East, Upper West, and Greater Accra. These areas, where Mahama traditionally enjoys significant support, played a crucial role in his success. On the other hand, Dr. Bawumia, despite strong showings in the Ashanti and Eastern regions, was unable to secure the wide-reaching support needed to win the election.
The results signal Mahama’s return to the presidency, following his previous tenure from 2012 to 2017. His campaign resonated with voters, particularly his promises to address Ghana’s economic challenges, restore confidence in governance, and implement much-needed reforms. Mahama’s victory reflects the electorate's desire for change and renewed leadership after a challenging period under the current administration.
Dr. Bawumia’s loss, despite his notable achievements as Vice President, marks a significant setback for the NPP. It suggests that the party will need to reassess its strategies and priorities as it transitions into opposition. Bawumia, widely seen as a promising political figure within the NPP, now faces the task of leading his party through a period of reflection and renewal.
With the results now clear, the focus shifts to the future of Ghana under Mahama’s leadership. His plans for economic recovery and institutional reforms will be closely scrutinized as he begins his second term, while the NPP will look to regroup and prepare for the next electoral cycle.
