Alleged angry NDC members raid EC office in Takoradi
A group of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters in the Efia Constituency of the Western Region stormed the Takoradi office of the Electoral Commission (EC) in protest over the parliamentary election results. The angry mob, chanting “No Majeed, no peace,” reportedly caused damage to the office but failed to gain entry.
Eyewitness Edward Amoah, a worker at the premises, described the scene: “We were here when we saw many members of the NDC arriving, visibly angry and shouting. They broke the glass door of the Electoral Commission office, but they couldn’t get inside. Fortunately, no officers were present at the time.”
The tense situation prompted a swift response from the Ghana Police Service. Officers arrived quickly to disperse the crowd and prevent further damage. “The police acted fast, removing them from the premises. However, the protesters remain nearby, and more supporters are still gathering. Police officers are monitoring the situation,” Amoah added.
The protest stems from the highly contested parliamentary election results in the Efia Constituency. Lawyer Yaw Boamah Nyarko of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was declared the winner with 15,870 votes, while the NDC’s Abdul-Majeed Iddrisu Nassam Dokurugu secured 13,892 votes. The NDC has rejected the results, alleging irregularities in the collation process.
The controversy deepened when Abdul-Majeed refused to sign the pink sheet, a key document verifying the results. Despite this, the Electoral Commission proceeded to declare the NPP candidate as the winner, fueling tensions among NDC supporters.
The situation highlights the growing political unrest in the aftermath of the elections. While the police have managed to maintain order so far, the presence of a growing crowd underscores the unresolved grievances of the NDC supporters. Their demand for transparency in the electoral process has added to the calls for the EC to address their concerns.
The incident serves as a reminder of the critical role of electoral transparency and the importance of addressing disputes promptly to maintain public trust in the democratic process. As tensions persist in the Efia Constituency, authorities and stakeholders must work together to ensure a peaceful resolution and uphold the integrity of Ghana’s elections.
