Lydia Forson: Voters Now Prioritize Issues Over Tribal or Party Loyalty

Ghanaian actress and businesswoman Lydia Forson has shared her insights into the factors behind the massive defeat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections. In an interview on BBC’s Newsday on December 9, 2024, Forson attributed the NPP's loss to the economic hardships experienced by Ghanaians under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo, and the government's failure to hold itself accountable. Forson explained that voters had become more discerning and were no longer driven by tribal lines or party loyalty. Instead, they focused on whether the government could deliver on its promises.

“This election was really about the people,” Forson remarked, emphasizing the electorate’s shift in priorities. She noted that voters were no longer simply loyal to political parties, but rather focused on whether the government could improve their lives. Forson stated, “It’s not about whether we like you or not. Are you going to deliver? If you can’t, we are going to hold you to your promises.”

The actress and businesswoman highlighted how the economic struggles, particularly the inflation and the devaluation of the cedi, had made life increasingly difficult for the average Ghanaian. This dissatisfaction was further compounded by the government's failure to address public concerns. Forson pointed to the widespread protests and the government’s lack of response, stressing that accountability and listening to the people were key to restoring faith in leadership. “Accountability is one of the main things a lot of young people are angry about,” she said.

Forson also explained how these economic challenges had directly impacted her own business, which produces natural hair and skincare products. She revealed that the rising cost of production due to the devaluation of the cedi had made it harder to run her business and create jobs. “The reality is, when you factor in the growing economy, we are going to be hit much harder,” she noted, adding that families, including her own, were increasingly dependent on her, intensifying the pressure.

In conclusion, Forson emphasized that the incoming government must prioritize listening to the concerns of the people and addressing the country's economic struggles. She was joined by Ghanaian rapper Manifest, who also noted that the NPP's loss stemmed from the "anger" and "hunger" felt by many Ghanaians.
