The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced the cancellation of the presidential election results in the Pusiga Constituency due to identified errors in the figures entered at the Constituency Collation Centre. The irregularities were flagged during a thorough review of the tabulated results.
According to a statement from the Regional Electoral Commission, the errors resulted from discrepancies in the collated data, which significantly impacted the outcome. After re-tabulating the figures, the revised results indicate that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has lost approximately 100 votes in the presidential race for the Pusiga Constituency.
The re-tallied figures were presented to party representatives, but the NDC officials, led by the party's Regional Secretary, refused to endorse the updated results sheet. The officials cited concerns about the process leading to the correction and demanded further clarity from the EC.
“Our decision not to sign the re-tabulated results is because we believe there are still unanswered questions about how the errors occurred in the first place,” the Regional Secretary stated. “We need assurances that the integrity of the process has not been compromised.”
The refusal to sign the corrected results has sparked tension among party members and supporters in the constituency, with some alleging that the process may have been influenced by external factors. However, the EC has maintained that the errors were purely clerical and not deliberate.
In a bid to address the growing tension, the Regional Electoral Commission has called on all stakeholders to remain calm while investigations into the original errors continue. “The Electoral Commission remains committed to ensuring that the election results reflect the will of the people. The re-tallied figures are accurate and were compiled transparently in the presence of party agents,” a spokesperson for the EC said.
The EC has also assured the public that additional measures will be put in place to prevent such errors in future elections. It emphasized the importance of all political parties cooperating fully with the commission to maintain public trust in the electoral process.
The loss of votes in Pusiga has dealt a significant blow to the NDC’s performance in the region, where the party traditionally enjoys strong support. Party insiders have expressed frustration with the development, fearing it could impact their overall strategy for the 2024 general elections.
Political analysts believe the issue in Pusiga highlights the importance of robust electoral systems and meticulous oversight at all levels of the collation process. They warn that any perceived lack of transparency could undermine public confidence in the EC and the broader democratic process.
The EC has promised to engage with all parties to resolve the matter amicably and ensure fairness. However, with the NDC standing firm in their rejection of the re-tabulated results, it remains unclear how the issue will be resolved in the coming days.
As the political atmosphere intensifies, all eyes are on the Electoral Commission to see how it navigates this challenging situation to uphold the integrity of the elections.
