Ghana's president-elect, John Dramani Mahama, has confirmed plans to inaugurate a joint transitional team with outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Wednesday, December 11, 2024. The announcement followed his resounding victory in the December 7 presidential election.
In his victory speech on December 9, delivered at his private office in Cantonments, Accra, Mahama revealed that he had received a congratulatory call from President Akufo-Addo. During the conversation, both leaders discussed the importance of a seamless transition to ensure the continuity of governance.
Flanked by his wife, Lordina Mahama, their children, and Vice President-elect Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Mahama expressed gratitude for the peaceful electoral process. The event was attended by key members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including party executives and former government officials such as Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, and Haruna Iddrisu.
In his speech, Mahama reiterated his commitment to delivering accountable and people-centered leadership, a sentiment echoed by his landslide victory. He highlighted that Ghanaians have clearly expressed their demand for integrity and effective governance.
"I am deeply humbled by the trust you have placed in me," Mahama stated, emphasizing his promise to rule with humility, inclusiveness, and a focus on improving the lives of all citizens.
Mahama began his address by commending Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his concession speech, calling it a testament to political maturity and a peaceful democratic process.
He also thanked President Akufo-Addo for the congratulatory call and acknowledged the significance of collaboration in building a stronger Ghana. "This is not about partisanship; it is about putting the nation first," Mahama affirmed.
The president-elect vowed to tackle pressing issues such as economic development, social equality, and governance reforms. He called on all Ghanaians to work together in the spirit of unity, emphasizing that every citizen has a role in shaping the country's future.
Mahama’s victory marks a turning point for Ghana, with the transition process already set in motion. The inauguration of the joint transitional team on December 11 will symbolize the beginning of a new chapter for the West African nation.
