Following the declaration of John Dramani Mahama as the winner of Ghana’s 2024 presidential election, reports of isolated post-election disturbances, including looting and vandalism, have emerged in various parts of the country. These incidents have raised concerns about maintaining peace and order during the transition period.
In Sunyani, the Bono Regional Forestry Commission office was targeted by a group believed to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Armed with machetes, the group forcibly entered the premises, seizing two patrol vehicles, several chainsaws, and numerous motorbikes. They coerced staff into surrendering keys to the vehicles and attempted to tow away additional property, including a safe containing funds. However, the safe was too heavy to remove.
The invaders also vandalized property, breaking into offices and destroying equipment. Workers at the facility reported being robbed of personal belongings during the attack. The security officer on duty, Adams Ganiyu, recounted how he fled into nearby bushes to escape the group, who pursued him but eventually left the area.
In addition to the Sunyani incident, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) headquarters in Accra was ransacked. Similarly, the constituency office of the defeated Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, was vandalized following her electoral loss.
Military personnel have been deployed to the Forestry Commission offices in Sunyani to prevent further attacks and secure government property. Workers at the site expressed their trauma over the incident, emphasizing the extensive damage to offices and theft of resources.
The actions in Sunyani appeared to be targeted at seizing valuables and property rather than taking over administrative roles. Witnesses reported that the attackers left with stolen items, including motorbikes and lumber, and attempted to tow additional vehicles.
In light of these incidents, the leadership of the NDC has condemned the acts of vandalism and called on supporters to celebrate responsibly. The party emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and respecting democratic values during the transition period.
With transitional arrangements set to begin, President-elect Mahama and outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo are working to ensure a smooth handover of power. The government and law enforcement agencies are expected to address the unrest promptly to reassure citizens of the nation’s stability.
These events serve as a reminder of the need for vigilance in safeguarding democratic processes and ensuring that peace prevails during post-election periods.
