Medikal Accuses NPP of Incarcerating Him for Political Gain

Ghanaian rapper Medikal has opened up about his experience in jail, claiming his arrest was politically motivated following the defeat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December 7 elections.

Medikal was arrested in September 2021 for brandishing a gun in a video posted on social media. He was charged with unlawful display of arms and ammunition. Initially, the rapper pleaded not guilty to the charge, but the court denied him bail, leading to his five-day detention in police custody. On October 26, 2021, Medikal was granted bail of ¢100,000 when he appeared in court again.

In a recent post on X, Medikal shared his perspective on the incident, linking it to the ruling government at the time. He accused the NPP of orchestrating his imprisonment for no justifiable reason. "NPP arrested me for no tangible reason, NPP put me in cells, locked me up in jail (Ankaful Maximum Security Prison) all in the name of power," Medikal wrote. He further revealed that his lawyers attempted to communicate with higher authorities but were met with the response, “it’s an order from above.”

Medikal's comments come in the wake of the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections, where the NPP, led by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its candidate, former President John Dramani Mahama. Despite the results not being officially confirmed by the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Bawumia acknowledged Mahama's victory in a public address, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve as vice president and a presidential candidate.

In his post, Medikal also expressed his thoughts on Mahama's potential leadership, urging him to prioritize the welfare of the youth in Ghana. "Let it be known to the incoming president, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, that I do not trust him but rather believe in him," Medikal wrote. He emphasized the importance of focusing on the youth, particularly those like Sharaf, a close friend of his, and their future. Medikal believes this focus on the youth will bring about the much-needed change for the betterment of Ghana and its citizens.

Medikal's message highlights his dissatisfaction with the NPP's actions and his hopes for a new direction under Mahama's leadership. He called for significant change that benefits the youth, a demographic he believes holds the future of the country.
