Mahama Declares Akufo-Addo’s Era “Darkest Period” in Ghana’s History, Promises National Renewal
President-elect John Dramani Mahama has described the past eight years under President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration as one of the darkest chapters in Ghana’s history. Speaking after his decisive electoral victory, Mahama criticized the outgoing administration for what he termed weak leadership and misplaced priorities that deepened the country’s challenges.
“These eight years have witnessed some of the darkest periods of our governance,” Mahama stated. He highlighted the economic and social crises that have plagued the nation, emphasizing the toll on Ghana’s collective spirit. “The crisis our beloved country has been through these last several years has left a scar on our national psyche.”
Mahama attributed his victory to Ghanaians’ rejection of poor governance and their demand for a better future. “This outcome is a repudiation of bad governance, weak leadership, and misplaced priorities,” he said. “The people of Ghana have made it clear that they demand better.”
Acknowledging the significant challenges ahead, Mahama painted a stark picture of the state of the nation, describing it as an “abyss” created by years of mismanagement. However, he expressed a firm commitment to addressing the nation’s problems through unity, transparency, and decisive action.
“We intend to work together to restore the shattered confidence in our politics and governance system,” he said, emphasizing the need for a reset in the relationship between citizens and their leaders. Mahama pledged governance reforms aimed at increasing transparency and accountability, promising to rebuild trust in public institutions.
Despite his sharp critique of the past administration, Mahama struck a hopeful and unifying tone about the future, calling on Ghanaians to channel their frustrations into positive action. “Let us not give in to pessimism. Instead, let us work tirelessly to rebuild our nation,” he urged.
Mahama also stressed the importance of collective effort in overcoming the challenges facing the country. “We are determined to work together with you to build the Ghana we want, and I am certain that we shall win this battle,” he declared.
As he prepares to take office, Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to leading a government that prioritizes the needs of the people, promising to guide Ghana out of its current difficulties and toward a brighter future. “Our task is monumental, but our resolve is stronger,” he concluded.
