Ghanaian rapper Medikal has opened up about his past imprisonment, linking the incident to the actions of the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. His reflections come amid the fallout from the December 7 elections, where Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP conceded defeat to former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In September 2021, Medikal, known for hits like Omo Ada, was arrested for brandishing a firearm in a social media video. He was subsequently charged with the unlawful display of arms and ammunition. Initially pleading not guilty, Medikal was denied bail and remanded in police custody for five days. On October 26, 2021, he was granted bail set at ¢100,000.
Reflecting on the ordeal in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Medikal criticized the outgoing NPP government, alleging his detention was politically motivated. “NPP arrested me for no tangible reason. They locked me up in Ankaful Maximum Security Prison, all in the name of power. My lawyers sought clarity, only to be told, ‘It’s an order from above,’” he wrote.
Medikal also addressed President-elect John Dramani Mahama, urging him to focus on improving the welfare of Ghanaian youth. “Let it be known to the incoming president that while I may not trust him, I believe in him. This new change must bring drastic reforms! For the sake of Sharaf [Mahama’s son, a close friend] and the youth, let’s work for a better Ghana,” he emphasized.
As Medikal shared his personal story, the political transition unfolded. Although the Electoral Commission of Ghana has yet to officially announce results, the NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Bawumia, has conceded defeat. In a televised address from his residence, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the NDC’s victory, expressing gratitude to Ghanaians for the opportunity to serve as vice president and presidential candidate.
“Our party’s internal collation shows a win for the opposition NDC and former President John Mahama. I congratulate him and wish him success,” Dr. Bawumia stated, urging unity and continuity in serving the nation.
As Ghana prepares for its next chapter under Mahama’s leadership, Medikal’s poignant reflections highlight the challenges many hope will be addressed in the years to come.
