M.anifest: "Ghanaians Rejected NPP Over Nation's Decline"

Ghanaian rapper Kwame Ametepee Tsikata, known as M.anifest, has offered insights into the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the December 7, 2024, elections. Speaking on BBC's Newsday with James Copnall on December 9, 2024, the "Suffer" rapper attributed the party's defeat to public dissatisfaction with the government's performance.

“People were unhappy that the country was not being run but was being run down,” M.anifest stated, emphasizing that Ghanaians were displeased with the state of governance under the NPP.

When asked about the prospects of the incoming administration led by former President John Dramani Mahama, M.anifest remained cautious. “It’s difficult to be confident in any leadership until you see how they operate. In our local parlance, we say ‘show working.’ There is a level of accountability that we as citizens are going to hold him and other leaders to at this point.”

He highlighted the growing trend of civic activism, particularly among Ghanaian youth, as a sign of increased political awareness and accountability. Referencing protests over the past four years, including those against illegal mining and high unemployment, M.anifest said, “The youth, who are most affected, are beginning to express their voices more frequently. We don’t wait every four years to express that voice through votes. There is a sense of everyday accountability and urgency.”

However, M.anifest noted that dissatisfaction with the NPP government extended beyond the youth. “We have seen pensioners in the last four years also go out on the streets,” he pointed out, underlining that discontent was widespread across different demographics.

Although the Electoral Commission of Ghana has yet to officially declare the results, the NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its candidate, John Dramani Mahama.

In a public address from his residence, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the provisional results collated internally by the NPP, which indicated Mahama’s victory. He expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for allowing him to serve as vice president and presidential candidate.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has urged Ghanaians to remain patient as the final results are officially announced.

M.anifest’s reflections resonate with a broader narrative of increasing civic engagement and demand for better governance in Ghana, signaling a shift towards more active citizen participation in political accountability.
