Rice, oil, and deceit – John Dumelo exposes opponent’s tactics
In a significant shift in Ghana's political landscape, actor-turned-politician John Dumelo has claimed victory as the new Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency under the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Dumelo, who is widely known for his career in entertainment, shared his thoughts on his successful campaign during an exclusive interview with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz.
Reflecting on his victory, Dumelo expressed confidence in the support he received from the electorate. He also addressed the election tactics employed by his opponent, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, who, according to Dumelo, resorted to distributing food, money, and other incentives to voters. Dumelo commented on this strategy, stating, “It was at that point I knew she’s lost the election from the onset. If you know you’ve worked, if you know you’ve been a good MP, why are you sharing food, money, rice, and oil? Of course, it backfired.” His remarks highlighted the contentious nature of political tactics in Ghana, where such actions can sometimes be seen as attempts to sway voters through material incentives rather than focusing on substantive policy and governance.
Dumelo’s comments also shed light on his campaign strategy, which he emphasized was rooted in genuine engagement with the people of Ayawaso West Wuogon. He rejected the idea of resorting to temporary, superficial actions just before elections. “I don’t want to be the kind of MP that will disappear and only show up during election time to share rice,” he stated, signaling his commitment to consistent service to his constituents.
As Dumelo prepares to assume his new role in parliament, his victory marks a significant transition from his career in the entertainment industry to active politics. His win introduces a fresh perspective to the political scene, offering a blend of celebrity influence and political engagement. His campaign promises a break from traditional political practices, focusing on genuine, long-term support for the people of Ayawaso West Wuogon.
Dumelo’s success, alongside his commitment to serving his constituents without resorting to tactics seen in previous elections, reflects a broader desire for change in Ghana's political environment. His candidacy, and now his victory, may serve as a model for future politicians, particularly those from non-traditional backgrounds, looking to engage with voters on a deeper, more meaningful level.
