The Inspiring Tale: A Disabled Prosthetist Empowering PWDs in the North
In the heart of northern Ghana, amidst the challenges and opportunities, a story of resilience and hope unfolds. This is the tale of Sulemana Asibu, a 36-year-old prosthetist who has turned his personal struggles into a source of inspiration for persons with disabilities (PWDs) across the region.
Born in a small village near Tamale, Sulemana faced an uphill battle from an early age. At just 10 years old, a severe motorbike accident left him with a permanent disability, requiring the amputation of his right leg. The incident was life-changing, but not in the way one might expect. While others saw limitations, Sulemana saw an opportunity to redefine his life and empower others.
Determined to rise above his circumstances, Sulemana pursued his education with fervor, eventually earning a scholarship to study prosthetics and orthotics in Accra. After years of rigorous training, he returned to the north with a clear mission: to provide affordable, high-quality prosthetic limbs and mobility aids to PWDs, many of whom struggle to access such services due to poverty and neglect.
Today, Sulemana runs Hope Limb Center, a modest workshop in Tamale. The center provides prosthetic limbs, braces, and wheelchairs to individuals who would otherwise be left immobile or dependent on others. Sulemana’s approach is holistic; he not only provides these essential tools but also counsels his clients on regaining confidence and embracing life with dignity.
“I know what it means to feel helpless,” Sulemana shares, his voice brimming with emotion. “But I also know the joy of reclaiming your independence. That’s what I want for every person who walks through my doors.”
His clients range from children born with congenital limb deformities to farmers injured in accidents and elderly individuals suffering from diabetes-related amputations. Sulemana’s ability to relate to his clients on a personal level has earned him a reputation as not just a service provider but also a source of hope and encouragement.
One of his recent success stories is 17-year-old Halima, a high school student who lost her leg to cancer. Through Sulemana’s work, Halima received a prosthetic limb that enabled her to walk again and continue her education. “Uncle Sulemana gave me a second chance,” Halima says, her face lighting up with gratitude. “He made me believe that my life is not over.”
Despite his remarkable work, Sulemana’s journey has not been without challenges. The high cost of materials and limited funding often hinder his ability to serve more clients. However, he remains undeterred, relying on donations and his personal savings to keep the center running.
Looking ahead, Sulemana dreams of expanding Hope Limb Center into a fully equipped rehabilitation hub that will serve not only northern Ghana but the entire country. He also advocates for greater government support and inclusion of PWDs in national development policies.
As the sun sets over Tamale, Sulemana can be found in his workshop, crafting another prosthetic limb with precision and care. For him, each limb is not just a piece of equipment but a lifeline, a chance for someone to stand tall and face the world anew.
