The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has reassured the public that it remains committed to completing the collation of parliamentary election results in all outstanding constituencies. This assurance was delivered by Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Operations, during a press briefing in Accra on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.

Mr. Tettey emphasized that the EC is collaborating with security agencies and political party leadership to ensure that the collation processes adhere strictly to legal protocols, safeguarding the integrity of the elections.

Challenges in Key Constituencies

One of the highlighted challenges occurred in the Ablekuma North Constituency, where collation was abruptly halted last Tuesday due to disruptions caused by the presence of political party supporters. According to Mr. Tettey, some EC staff were allegedly coerced and threatened by party loyalists to prematurely declare results.

Other constituencies experiencing similar tensions include Dome Kwabenya, Tema Central, Ayensuano, and Okaikoi Central. These areas have also reported disturbances, with supporters of various political parties besieging collation centers and obstructing the process.

The EC Deputy Chairman urged political party leaders to restrain their supporters from engaging in acts that could compromise the collation process. "We call on party leaders to ensure their supporters withdraw from collation centers to allow the process to continue smoothly," he said.

Commitment to Upholding the People's Choice

Despite the challenges, the EC reiterated its resolve to ensure that the collation of results reflects the genuine choice of voters. Mr. Tettey assured the public that the Commission remains impartial and committed to completing the process in a transparent manner.

"The Commission wishes the public to note that more than any institution, it would like to bring an end to all collation in outstanding constituencies," he stated. He further reassured Ghanaians that the EC would not impede the collation process and would uphold the principles of fairness and legality.

Calls for Calm and Compliance

As tensions persist, the EC has called on political parties to prioritize peace and adhere to established legal frameworks for resolving disputes. The assurance comes amidst heightened post-election tensions, with reports of violence and property damage in some areas.

This year’s elections have underscored the need for stronger measures to manage electoral disputes and maintain order during critical processes like collation. As the EC works to finalize results, it remains steadfast in its mission to ensure the will of the people prevails.
