The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has expressed grave concerns over recent incidents where mobs attempted to disarm military personnel deployed to support the Ghana Police Service in maintaining law and order during the election period.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, and signed by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations, the GAF reminded the public that soldiers on authorized duty have the right to defend themselves, civilians, and property when faced with threats. The military warned that such defense could involve the use of lethal force if necessary to protect lives.

“Military personnel on authorized duty have the right to defend themselves, innocent civilians, and property, including the use of lethal force, if necessary to preserve life,” the statement emphasized.

Call for Responsible Conduct

The GAF urged citizens to exercise their civic rights responsibly and cooperate with security personnel to ensure peace and stability. They also called on the public to refrain from actions that could undermine national security, especially in the tense post-election period.

The Armed Forces reiterated their unwavering commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s stability and sovereignty, while encouraging all Ghanaians to uphold law and order during this critical time.

Incident in Obuasi Highlights Tensions

One significant incident occurred on December 7 in the Obuasi municipality of the Ashanti Region. A video circulating on social media captured an altercation between two armed soldiers and civilians believed to be affiliated with a political party. The civilians reportedly blocked the soldiers from accessing a polling center and attempted to disarm them.

In the video, a civilian was heard saying, “Get away, if you try you will see. Where are you going?” In response, one of the soldiers warned against video recording and insisted on proceeding with their duties.

This altercation highlighted the increasing tension and confrontations faced by security personnel in their efforts to maintain order during the elections.

GAF’s Firm Position

The GAF’s statement serves as a stern warning against further attempts to obstruct the operations of security personnel. It also underscores the importance of respecting the role of the military and police in preserving peace during periods of heightened political tension.

As Ghana navigates the aftermath of the 2024 elections, security agencies have urged political parties, their supporters, and the general public to prioritize peace and cooperation. These measures are crucial to ensuring that the country emerges from this period with its democratic principles and social harmony intact.
