Jamie Foxx reveals he had a stroke in 2023

Hollywood star Jamie Foxx has opened up about the health scare that led to his hospitalization in April last year. Speaking during his Netflix special, Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…, recorded in Atlanta, Foxx revealed he suffered a "brain bleed that led to a stroke."

Recalling the events leading up to his hospitalization, the Django Unchained actor shared that he initially experienced a severe headache and asked for an aspirin but blacked out before he could take it. “I don’t remember 20 days,” he said. At the time, his daughter, Corinne Foxx, had described the incident as a “medical complication” without providing further details.

Foxx revealed that he was initially sent home by medical staff after being given a cortisone injection. However, his sister, Deidra Dixon, noticed he wasn’t himself when she visited and decided to take him to Piedmont Hospital. There, a doctor discovered he was experiencing a brain bleed and urgently required surgery. “The doctor told my family, ‘If I don’t go in his head right now, we’re going to lose him,’” Foxx recounted, crediting his sister’s quick thinking and prayers for saving his life.

The actor shared that doctors were unable to determine the origin of the brain bleed. Reflecting on his near-death experience, he described a surreal sense of peace during the ordeal. “Your life doesn’t flash before your face; it was kind of oddly peaceful. I saw a tunnel, but I didn’t see the light,” he said, joking, “It was hot in that tunnel—am I going to the wrong place?”

Foxx also detailed the aftermath of his stroke, waking up on May 4, 2023, in a wheelchair, unable to walk, and initially in denial about his condition. “Jamie Foxx doesn’t get strokes,” he said. He underwent rehabilitation in Chicago to regain his mobility and health.

Throughout the ordeal, Foxx praised his sister and daughter for keeping his condition private until he was ready to speak. “They didn’t want you to see me like this, and I didn’t want you to see me like this,” he said, noting their efforts to shield him from public scrutiny and potential mockery.

Foxx expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of his family during his recovery. He had been filming the Netflix project Back In Action alongside Cameron Diaz when he fell ill, and this marks the first time he has provided detailed insight into his health crisis.
