Two separate attacks targeted Russia's southern Rostov region and western Bryansk region, both of which have faced cross-border Ukrainian fire throughout Moscow's nearly three-year invasion. Videos from Bryansk showed a fireball lighting up the night sky over an urban area, while air raid sirens were heard in the Rostov region.

Kyiv lay claims for being responsible for striking an oil depot in Bryansk, which it said was supplying the Russian military, while the governor of Rostov reported a Ukrainian missile attack on an industrial enterprise in Taganrog.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed these strikes as "tangible blows" against Russian targets that would help bring an end to the war. In a Telegram post, he confirmed the attacks on military and fuel infrastructure, which he said were being used to support Russia's aggression against Ukraine. This year, Ukraine has intensified strikes on Russian oil and gas facilities, causing significant damage to Moscow's energy industry.

Ukraine's military stated that Russia had been using the Bryansk facility as a key point for the Druzhba oil pipeline, a major supply route to central Europe. The Ukrainian general staff confirmed a massive fire broke out at the site. The Russian governor of Bryansk by the name Alexander Bogomaz, has confirmed a drone attack on a production facility but stated that the fire had been snuffed out.

Refineries and oil depots play a very crucial role in Russia's economy, with some facilities equipped with air defence systems which are to protect against attacks. In response to Ukrainian drone strikes, Russia has redirected oil to locations farther from Ukraine, as Ukrainian attacks have reached hundreds of kilometres into Russian territory.

Ukraine asserts that its attacks are justified retaliation for Russia's strikes on its energy infrastructure, which have caused widespread power outages.
