The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised alarms over what it describes as widespread post-election violence by supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following their victory in Ghana’s general elections. Speaking at a press conference in Accra, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua highlighted numerous reports of vandalism and hooliganism targeting the homes of Members of Parliament and parliamentary candidates affiliated with the NPP. According to Mr. Kodua, these acts threaten Ghana’s hard-earned reputation as a peaceful democracy and must be addressed urgently. He called on President-elect John Dramani Mahama to take responsibility by urging his supporters to refrain from unlawful acts and ensuring that the ongoing electoral processes remain undisturbed.
In his statement, Mr. Kodua also appealed to key institutions such as the National Peace Council, the National House of Chiefs, the Christian Council of Ghana, and civil society organizations to join the effort in condemning these acts of lawlessness. He emphasized the importance of maintaining Ghana’s democratic values and urged these groups to publicly denounce the violence to safeguard the country’s peace. The NPP leader expressed disappointment that such incidents are occurring during a critical transitional period and urged stakeholders to protect Ghana’s democratic legacy of over three decades. Furthermore, he called on the diplomatic community to monitor the situation and hold those responsible for these disturbances accountable.
To curb the growing tension, Mr. Kodua requested the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to intervene by deploying security personnel to restore law and order in affected areas. He noted that these violent acts, if left unchecked, could escalate and undermine public confidence in the electoral system. The NPP reiterated its commitment to supporting peaceful transitions and ensuring democratic integrity but insisted that the NDC’s leadership must take swift action to stop their supporters’ disruptive activities. The party’s statement underscores the need for collective action to address the situation, preserve peace, and ensure that Ghana remains a beacon of democracy in the region.
