Man Sentenced to 65 Years for Attack on Judge in Courtroom Incident
Deobra Redden, a 31-year-old man, has been sentenced to a prison term of 26 to 65 years following a violent attack on Judge Mary Kay Holthus in a Las Vegas courtroom. The attack occurred on January 3, 2024, as Judge Holthus prepared to sentence Redden in a felony battery case. Without warning, Redden leaped over the judge's four-foot-high bench, grabbed her hair, and toppled an American flag in the process. The shocking incident, captured on courtroom video, showed the 62-year-old judge falling backward against a wall. Although she sustained minor injuries, she was not hospitalized. Redden later admitted to the act, pleading guilty but mentally ill to charges that included attempted murder, which brought his trial to an abrupt end in September.
During court proceedings, Redden’s defense lawyer, Carl Arnold, highlighted the role of untreated mental illness in the attack.
