Asante Kotoko has announced the return of striker Kwame Opoku on a two-year deal, contingent on medical checks and international transfer clearance. The 27-year-old forward rejoins the club following a successful period during the 2020/21 season where he made a significant impact, scoring six goals and providing three assists in 16 matches. After his time with Kotoko, Opoku had stints with Algerian side USM Alger and Moroccan club Olympique Khouribga. Now, with his return to Kotoko, he aims to bring his goal-scoring prowess back to the Porcupine Warriors and help the team achieve success in the current season and beyond.
Kwame Opoku expressed his delight at rejoining Kotoko, stating, “It’s a great feeling to be back at Kotoko. This club has always felt like home to me, and I’m eager to contribute to the team’s success.” The striker acknowledged the unwavering support from the fans even during his absence and promised to give his all on the pitch. Head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum also highlighted how Opoku’s experiences in Algeria and Morocco will enhance his skills and add value to the team’s attack. With Kotoko struggling with their form this season, particularly in the attacking department, Opoku’s return is seen as a significant boost, offering depth and experience to the squad as they aim for top honors.
Opoku’s addition is particularly timely for Kotoko, who have scored just 10 goals in 12 league games this season, relying heavily on top scorer Albert Amoah, who is currently injured. Opoku’s goal-scoring ability and experience are expected to fill the void and provide much-needed depth. Though he will miss Kotoko’s upcoming Matchday 13 clash against Hearts of Oak due to the registration process, his presence in the squad will be crucial moving forward. As the team prepares for a competitive second half of the season, Opoku’s return is viewed as a vital asset in Kotoko’s bid to compete for the league title and other domestic honors.
