Sports Minister Vows Justice for Slain Asante Kotoko Fan
Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has assured the leadership of Asante Kotoko that justice will be served for the tragic killing of Francis Frimpong Pooley, a devoted supporter of the club. Pooley was fatally stabbed by unidentified assailants during Kotoko’s Matchday 19 fixture against Nsoatreman FC in Nsoatre. In response to the incident, authorities have arrested seven individuals, including Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, a key figure in Nsoatreman FC and a former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations. The Sunyani District Court “B” has since placed Baffour-Awuah under a movement restriction order as investigations continue. During a meeting with Asante Kotoko’s management in Kumasi, Kofi Adams reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring those responsible for the crime are held accountable.
Speaking at the gathering, Adams emphasized that the government would not merely issue condemnations but would take concrete steps to prevent such violence from recurring. He revealed that he is in regular communication with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to receive updates on the case and ensure a thorough investigation. Stressing the importance of justice, he reassured football stakeholders that no individual involved in the incident—regardless of their status—would be exempt from punishment. Adams also highlighted the necessity of implementing stronger security measures at league matches to safeguard players, officials, and supporters from similar acts of violence in the future. His firm stance aims to send a clear message that such incidents will not be tolerated in Ghanaian football.
Following Pooley’s tragic death, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) temporarily suspended league activities to assess the situation and collaborate with the 18 Premier League clubs on safety reforms. Discussions have since taken place to introduce policies aimed at preventing violence in football and ensuring that stadiums remain safe environments for fans. The incident has reignited calls for a more structured and autonomous league, as many believe that better governance and stricter regulations could reduce such unfortunate events. With pressure mounting from football clubs, government officials, and the general public, there is an urgent need for reforms to enhance security and accountability in the Ghana Premier League.
