Kwesi Appiah Returns to GFA Executive Council After AFCON Qualifiers

Kwesi Appiah, the former Ghana Black Stars coach and current Head of Sporting Affairs at Asante Kotoko, has confirmed his return to the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) following the conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Appiah had stepped down temporarily from his role in October, in compliance with a directive from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to avoid any conflict of interest during the critical qualifying matches against Sudan and other opponents. In an interview with Asempa FM, Appiah explained that his absence was brief, lasting from October until November. He shared, “I temporarily left my role due to the games until November. I have been restored to the ExCO but since then, there has been no meeting at the moment.” Appiah's return to the council marks a significant development for Ghana football, bringing back his wealth of experience and insight as the country prepares for the upcoming AFCON in Morocco.

Appiah to Lead Falcons of Jediane to 2026 AFCON

Kwesi Appiah is not only back with the GFA’s Executive Council but is also set to lead the Falcons of Jediane to the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco next year. The former Black Stars coach has been tasked with steering the national team’s progress through the AFCON qualifiers and eventually to the tournament itself. His deep understanding of the game and proven track record in coaching make him a key figure in the development of football in Ghana. Appiah’s return to the GFA’s ExCO comes with high expectations as he is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Ghana football, both at the national team level and within domestic football structures.

Impact of Appiah’s Return on Ghana Football

Kwesi Appiah’s return to the GFA Executive Council is seen as a crucial step towards rebuilding and strengthening Ghana’s footballing landscape. His experience as a coach and administrator brings a wealth of knowledge to the table, particularly as the country prepares to qualify for the 2026 World Cup and the 2026 AFCON. Appiah’s leadership will be instrumental in implementing strategies that aim to enhance player development, improve grassroots football, and create a sustainable pathway for young talents. As Ghana looks forward to these tournaments, his guidance and oversight will be vital in ensuring the Black Stars and other national teams are well-prepared to compete at the highest level. The football community in Ghana will be closely watching as Appiah returns to play a significant role in shaping the future of the sport in the country.
