Ghana's recent electoral process has been praised by the European Union (EU), acknowledging it as a strong proof of the country’s vibrant democracy. The EU Ambassador to Ghana by the name Irshad Ramiandrasoa Razaaly, applauded the professionalism and dedication which was displayed during the elections in a LinkedIn post, noting the peaceful nature of the voting process.
The EU played an active role in observing the election, with 88 diplomats from EU Member States, Norway, and Switzerland visiting 430 polling stations across 10 regions on December 7. Razaaly praised the orderly conduct of the voting and the professionalism of polling staff and security forces. He particularly highlighted the precise timing of the polling station closures and the smooth counting process, applauding Ghana's Electoral Commission and its Chair, Jean Mensa.
This year, the EU focused on supporting domestic institutions and civil society organizations. In partnership with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the EU helped deploy 4,000 domestic observers. Key organizations like the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), CODEO, WANEP, the National Peace Council (NPC), and others contributed significantly to ensuring the election’s transparency and peace.
The EU acknowledged Ghana’s strong democratic culture, noting the dedication of voters, party agents, and local observers. The Ambassador also congratulated the President-elect John Dramani Mahama on his victory, expressing a commitment to deepening the EU-Ghana partnership. He also praised Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for taking on a board defeat graciously.
The EU emphasizes on the fact that shows while there were isolated incidents, and the overall electoral process was worthy, bonding Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa. The EU’s endorsement reinforces Ghana’s status as a model for free, fair, and transparent elections, setting the stage for continued collaboration on national development.
