The 2024 parliamentary elections in Ghana have reshaped the political landscape, marking the rise of notable celebrities who are transitioning from entertainment and media into politics. Amid the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s sweeping two-thirds majority win, five well-known personalities have secured parliamentary seats and are set to join the Ninth Parliament.
This blend of fame and governance raises exciting prospects for a more dynamic legislative future. Let’s dive into the stories behind these five trailblazers.
Kwame Asare Obeng, famously known as A Plus, has defied the odds to win the Gomoa Central parliamentary seat as an Independent Candidate. Known for his sharp political commentary and controversial stances, A Plus secured a decisive 14,277 votes, outpacing Eyiah Naana of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 11,637 votes.
“Politics needs authentic voices,” said one supporter. “A Plus speaks truth to power.”
The journey of actor and entrepreneur John Dumelo has been nothing short of inspiring. After narrowly losing the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat in 2020, Dumelo returned with renewed vigor, winning the 2024 race with 40,561 votes against Lydia Alhassan’s 27,377.
Known for his charm and connection with grassroots voters, Dumelo’s victory embodies perseverance. In a post-election message, he reminded his followers, “Never give up.”
Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu, founder of the 3 Music Awards, has successfully turned his creative influence into political power by winning the Okaikwei Central seat. Running on the NDC ticket, Baba Sadiq edged out Patrick Yaw Boamah of the NPP with 15,383 votes to 14,949.
However, the race isn’t without controversy, as Boamah has vowed to challenge the results in court.
Ohene Kwame Frimpong, CEO of Salt Media Group, has unseated incumbent Andy Appiah-Kubi to win the Asante Akyem North parliamentary seat as an Independent Candidate. Garnering an impressive 26,926 votes compared to Appiah-Kubi’s 8,933, Frimpong’s victory reflects the electorate’s demand for change.
Actress and NDC candidate Ebi Bright has triumphed in the closely contested Tema Central race, defeating Charles Forson of the NPP by a margin of just 118 votes (18,539 to 18,421).
Ebi Bright’s background in the creative arts positions her as a strong advocate for cultural development and youth empowerment.
The entry of celebrities into Parliament isn’t just a trend—it’s a signal that voters are ready for unconventional leaders who bring relatable experiences and fresh ideas to the table.
Will their star power translate into impactful governance? That’s the big question as these individuals gear up to represent their constituencies.
The addition of celebrity MPs introduces an interesting dynamic to the Ninth Parliament. Their visibility and public influence could foster greater citizen engagement with legislative processes.
