An investigation into an alleged rape and sexual assault in Stockholm, picking out Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé, has been brought to an end by Swedish prosecutors due to scanty evidence.
The incident was reported to have occurred at a luxury hotel on October 10, 2023, when 25-year-old Mbappé visited Stockholm with a group after being denied access to France's Nations League match. On October 15, the Swedish prosecution authority announced the investigation without naming the suspect. However, media outlets in Swedish like Aftonbladet, Expressen, and SVT put one's finger on Mbappé.
On December 12, prosecutor Marina Chirakova stated that there was too little evidence to move forward, and the investigation was therefore closed. She confirmed that the suspect had not been formally notified of any criminal suspicion.
The lawyer who stands in for Mbappé was amazed by the association with the case and claimed that the player was not involved, and Mbappé himself also denied any connection when speaking to French television.
Records had it that, the incident occurred after Mbappé and his group had dinner at a restaurant, followed by a visit to a nightclub. A complaint was filed on October 12 by the alleged victim, who had sought medical attention. Police reportedly lay hold of evidence, including women’s clothing, from the hotel.
Since Mbappé joined Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the summer, he has had a challenging season. Without being affected by the struggles with form, he scored in Real Madrid's 3-2 win over Atalanta in the Champions League, helping the team secure a crucial victory to advance in the tournament.
Mbappé who is known by and large is regarded as one of the football's top players and has won the 2018 World Cup with France and scored a hat-trick in the 2022 final. His time at PSG included a partnership with Lionel Messi and Neymar, making him one of the most high-profile athletes globally.
