President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerians to manage their expectations regarding the resolution of the country’s electricity crisis, stating that there is no "magical response" to achieving a steady power supply. Addressing concerns over the persistent power outages, Tinubu explained that the aging power infrastructure has suffered decades of neglect, making it challenging to implement quick fixes. He emphasized that while efforts are being made to address the issue, meaningful improvements will take time.
Tinubu highlighted the government’s ongoing reforms in the energy sector and reaffirmed his commitment to providing reliable electricity. He pointed to partnerships such as the Presidential Power Initiative with Siemens Energy, which aims to modernize the national grid and expand its capacity. However, he also acknowledged the limitations posed by outdated transmission lines, some of which have been in use for over 60 years.
This statement follows another collapse of Nigeria’s national grid, marking the 12th such incident in 2024. The recurrent grid failures have disrupted businesses and households, fueling public frustration. Critics have called for faster implementation of policies to stabilize the energy supply. However, Tinubu reiterated that achieving a sustainable solution requires comprehensive and strategic investment in infrastructure, as well as policy alignment across multiple sectors.
Despite the challenges, Tinubu expressed optimism about the gradual improvements being recorded in some areas. Reports suggest that several states now enjoy up to 22 hours of power daily, a development attributed to the government’s policies aimed at decentralizing electricity generation and encouraging private sector participation. These advancements, though localized, provide hope for broader national improvements in the future.
Energy experts have supported Tinubu’s stance, emphasizing that fixing Nigeria's electricity problems is a long-term process that involves tackling issues such as low generation capacity, inefficient distribution networks, and energy theft. Many have called on the government to prioritize renewable energy solutions and diversify energy sources to reduce dependence on the national grid.
While Nigerians remain anxious for immediate results, Tinubu’s administration has promised to remain transparent and accountable as it works to overcome the obstacles to achieving a stable and reliable power supply.
