Trump on economic hardship

President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to make rising grocery costs a thing of the past, promising that Americans will soon be able to afford their food without strain. They’re going to be affording their groceries very soon, Trump declared Thursday while ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange, where he was recognized as Time’s Person of the Year.

According to recent data from the November Consumer Price Index, grocery prices have surged by 22% since Trump left office in January 2021 and are 27% higher than in February 2020, before the onset of the pandemic. These steep increases have placed significant financial pressure on households across the country.

During his remarks, Trump shared a story illustrating the impact of food inflation. He recounted the experience of an old woman who went to a grocery store to buy three apples but, after seeing the price, decided to return one. She put them down on the counter, and she looked and saw the price, and she said, Would you excuse me?’ And she walked one of the apples back to the refrigerator Trump said, emphasizing the strain of rising costs on everyday Americans.

While on the campaign trail, Trump’s strategy to combat food inflation centered heavily on increasing domestic oil production, arguing that energy costs drive up prices across the economy. However, as he prepares for his return to the White House, Trump’s approach has evolved to include addressing supply chain disruptions alongside ramping up oil drilling.

Speaking at an August press conference in front of a table of packaged foods, Trump highlighted food inflation as a key issue during his campaign. Grocery prices have skyrocketed, he said, pledging swift action if elected. When I win, I will immediately bring prices down, starting on day one, he stated, reiterating his familiar call to drill, baby, drill” as a way to lower production and transportation costs.

While Trump’s focus on oil drilling reflects his belief in energy independence as a solution to inflation, experts note that addressing supply chain inefficiencies will be equally critical to stabilizing food prices. For many Americans struggling to make ends meet, the promise of relief can’t come soon enough. As Trump prepares to take office, all eyes will be on whether his policies can deliver meaningful changes to the nation’s grocery bills.
