The European qualifying draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place on Friday, 13 December 2024, at 11:00 GMT in Zurich. This event marks the start of the journey for UEFA nations seeking to secure one of 16 available spots in the expanded 48-team tournament, set to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The qualifying format has been revamped, introducing 12 groups, with six groups featuring four teams and the other six consisting of five teams. All teams will compete in home-and-away fixtures, and the winners of each group will automatically qualify for the World Cup. Runners-up will enter playoffs, where they will join four Nations League teams to vie for the final four qualification spots.

The seeding for the draw is structured into five pots based on team rankings, with heavyweights like England, Spain, and Germany in Pot 1, and teams like Wales, Sweden, and Ukraine in Pot 2. Lower-ranked teams, including Northern Ireland and Scotland, occupy Pots 3 and 4, while Pot 5 features smaller nations like Malta and San Marino. To accommodate scheduling conflicts, teams advancing to the Nations League finals in March will automatically be placed in four-team groups, ensuring they have enough calendar space for both tournaments. Geopolitical and weather-related restrictions are also in place to avoid problematic matchups, such as keeping Ukraine and Belarus apart and limiting the number of cold-weather nations in the same group to reduce the risk of disruptions.

The matches will unfold across five international breaks between March and November 2025, with no team playing more than eight games during this period. Four-team groups will begin their campaigns in September due to Nations League scheduling conflicts. Playoffs to determine the remaining World Cup slots are scheduled for March 2026. The World Cup itself kicks off on 11 June 2026 in Mexico City, concluding on 19 July 2026 in New Jersey. For the first time, the expanded tournament will feature 12 groups of four teams, followed by a last-32 knockout round. This new format underscores the tournament’s growing scale and global appeal, ensuring more opportunities for countries to compete on football’s biggest stage. European teams are gearing up for an exciting and competitive qualifying process as they aim to secure their places in this historic event.
