President Nana Akufo-Addo and his team convened a meeting with President-elect John Dramani Mahama and his delegation at the Jubilee House as part of the ongoing transition process. However, the discussions have been overshadowed by concerns raised by Mahama's transition team over the outgoing administration's last-minute actions.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for the Mahama transition team, publicly criticized what he described as "alarming" last-minute appointments and financial transactions across various ministries, departments, and agencies. He called for an immediate halt to these actions, citing their potential to create serious financial burdens for the incoming administration.
Central to these concerns is a GH₵240 million payment reportedly linked to an organization associated with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). Speaking on the issue, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu highlighted the questionable nature of the payment. "While payments to independent power producers (IPPs) to ensure a stable power supply may be justified, this specific disbursement raises red flags. The entity involved plays a far less critical role than the IPPs," he explained.
He emphasized the importance of responsible governance during this transitional period. "Good governance demands that these financial commitments be deferred to the next government to ensure transparency and accountability," Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stated.
The Mahama transition team further criticized the outgoing administration for making late-stage decisions that could have lasting financial repercussions. "We strongly object to these actions and demand their immediate suspension to avoid setting a harmful precedent," he urged.
The team also stressed the need for greater transparency in the transition process. They called on the outgoing administration to avoid entering into unsustainable commitments that could hinder the incoming government's ability to implement its policies effectively.
As both teams work toward a smooth transition, the concerns raised highlight the importance of ensuring that governance remains transparent and accountable, especially during periods of political change.
