### Recalcitrant Akufo-Addo Caused NPP’s Heavy Defeat – Appiah-Kubi

In the aftermath of the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) unprecedented defeat in Ghana's 2024 general elections, Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has pointed fingers at the leadership style of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. According to Appiah-Kubi, the President’s refusal to heed advice and his autocratic decision-making significantly contributed to the party’s electoral loss.

Appiah-Kubi’s scathing critique underscores a broader sense of discontent within the NPP regarding how the government has handled key issues. He argues that President Akufo-Addo’s obstinate approach alienated core members of the party, grassroots supporters, and the general public. This alienation, he claims, weakened the party’s ability to mount an effective campaign and left it vulnerable to opposition parties.

### Key Factors Behind the Defeat

One of the central issues highlighted by Appiah-Kubi was the government’s handling of economic challenges, including inflation, unemployment, and corruption. Under Akufo-Addo’s administration, Ghana’s economy faced significant hurdles, including a soaring cost of living and an IMF bailout that many perceived as a sign of fiscal mismanagement. While these problems were not unique to Ghana, critics argue that the government’s lack of transparency and ineffective communication exacerbated public dissatisfaction.

Appiah-Kubi further accused Akufo-Addo of sidelining party structures and key stakeholders in decision-making. “He ignored sound advice from senior members of the party and imposed his personal agenda, which was not in the best interest of the NPP or the country,” Appiah-Kubi stated. This approach, he claimed, led to widespread disillusionment among NPP supporters, many of whom either abstained from voting or switched allegiance to the opposition.

Another significant factor was the selection of the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2024 elections. Appiah-Kubi criticized Akufo-Addo for allegedly influencing the party’s internal processes to ensure the victory of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the flagbearer. This move, he contended, disregarded the preferences of the party’s base and created internal divisions. Many party members viewed the process as undemocratic, which weakened their morale and unity during the campaign.

### Implications for the NPP

The NPP’s heavy defeat has sparked intense debate about the party’s future and the reforms needed to regain public trust. Appiah-Kubi’s comments reflect a growing consensus within the party that a shift in leadership and strategy is necessary. He called for introspection and a return to the party’s founding principles of inclusivity, accountability, and grassroots engagement.

Political analysts have also weighed in, suggesting that the NPP’s loss serves as a warning to political parties about the dangers of over-centralized leadership and neglect of public sentiment. For the NPP to recover, analysts argue, it must prioritize internal democracy, address economic challenges, and rebuild its relationship with voters.

### Conclusion

The accusations leveled by Andy Appiah-Kubi against President Akufo-Addo paint a picture of a party that lost its way due to poor leadership and internal divisions. While the NPP’s defeat in 2024 may mark the end of an era, it also offers an opportunity for the party to learn from its mistakes and rebuild. Whether the NPP can rise to this challenge remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the legacy of Akufo-Addo’s leadership will be a subject of intense scrutiny for years to come.
