Ghanaian musician and newly elected Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame A Plus, has made it clear that his primary focus in Parliament will be serving his constituents rather than advocating for the entertainment industry. In a recent interview, A Plus stated that he wants to manage expectations, emphasizing that his role in Parliament is to work for the people of Gomoa Central who voted for him, not to fight for the interests of the entertainment industry.
A Plus clarified that no creative group, such as the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) or the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG), supported his campaign during the elections. Instead, it was a few friends in the industry who stood by him throughout. He emphasized that he's not representing the creative industry, but rather serving the people of Gomoa Central.
However, A Plus did acknowledge the contributions of dancehall artiste Shatta Wale, urging the creative industry to pay attention to his advocacy. He praised Shatta Wale for speaking sense and encouraged the industry to listen to his views.
A Plus, real name Kwame Asare Obeng, reflected on his journey to Parliament, revealing that he began preparing six years ago by returning to school to acquire a Bachelor's degree, a Master's degree, and an LLB. This decision was part of his commitment to arming himself with the necessary knowledge for public service.
A Plus secured 14,277 votes in the 2024 elections, defeating the incumbent MP from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Naana Eyiah Quansah, by a margin of 2,640 votes ¹. He reiterated his dedication to the development and welfare of the Gomoa Central constituency as his foremost priority.
