The National Democratic Congress (NDC), under the leadership of President-elect John Dramani Mahama, gained a victory with 6,328,397 votes, making up 56.55% of the valid votes cast. This victory put in shade the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
In the parliamentary elections, the NDC got possession of a historic majority, gaining more than 18 additional seats. However, several well-known sports figures who entered politics faced defeats.
Here are some of those figures, as compiled by Pulse Ghana Sports:
Ignatius Baffour Awuah
Ignatius Baffour Awuah, the owner of Ghana Premier League club Nsoatreman and a key financier, suffered a loss in the Sunyani West constituency. Contesting as the NPP candidate, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations was prevailed over by the NDC’s Millicent Yeboah Amankwah, marking the end of his parliamentary career.
Frederick Acheampong
Frederick Acheampong, a member of the Ghana Football Association's (GFA) Executive Council, had high hopes after winning the NPP primaries. However, his bid to represent the Ahafo Ano South East constituency was drawn to a stand by the NDC’s Yakubu Mohammed, a major setback for the GFA official.
Pius Enam Hadzide
Pius Enam Hadzide, a former deputy sports minister and current CEO of the National Youth Authority, also failed to reach his parliamentary aspirations. Running for the NPP in the Asuogyaman constituency, Hadzide was defeated, losing the chance to represent his constituents in Parliament.
John Peter Amewu
John Peter Amewu, the financier of Division One League side Hohoe United and Minister for Railways Development, also lost his parliamentary seat. He was defeated in the Hohoe constituency by the NDC’s Thomas Worlanyo in a closely contested race.
