Public Outcry Over Poor Drainage Systems in Kumasi
Kumasi residents are once again facing severe disruptions due to recurrent flooding, a problem they blame on the city's inadequate drainage systems. This issue, which has plagued Ghana's second-largest city for years, is sparking increased public frustration and renewed calls for urgent infrastructure improvements.
Heavy rains this week caused widespread flooding in key areas such as Adum, Atonsu, and Anloga Junction. Homes and businesses were submerged, roads were impassable, and daily activities were brought to a halt. Frustrated residents took to the streets and social media to express their anger over what they see as negligence by local authorities.
One resident, Ama Boateng, who operates a shop in Atonsu, described the situation as unbearable. "Every time it rains, we lose our property and livelihoods. The drains are either clogged or too narrow to handle the water flow. We can’t keep going through this!" she exclaimed.
Experts say Kumasi’s drainage system was designed decades ago for a much smaller population and has not kept pace with urban expansion. Poor urban planning, illegal structures blocking water pathways, and lack of regular maintenance have exacerbated the issue. Many drains are frequently filled with waste due to ineffective waste management, worsening the flooding problem.
Kwame Frimpong, a civil engineer, highlighted the need for a comprehensive overhaul. "These flooding issues won't go away until we modernize the drainage infrastructure, clear encroachments, and adopt better waste disposal practices. Authorities must act swiftly."
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has previously promised drainage upgrades, but progress has been slow. In response to the latest flooding, the KMA assured residents that drainage improvement projects are underway, though no clear timeline has been provided.
Public frustration is mounting, with many residents demanding immediate action. Social media is abuzz with hashtags like #FixKumasiDrains and #StopTheFloods. Some citizens are even calling for protests if solutions are not implemented soon.
Local advocacy groups are urging authorities to prioritize this issue. A spokesperson for the Kumasi Residents Association said, "We need action, not just promises. The flooding is not just an inconvenience; it’s a threat to our lives and property."
As Kumasi's flooding woes persist, the demand for immediate and effective solutions grows louder. Will the authorities finally listen to the public's outcry, or will the city continue to sink with every heavy rain?
