Chelsea have made an unexpected rise to the top of the Premier League title race under Enzo Maresca, who has successfully turned the club's fortunes around after years of turmoil. Following an extravagant spending spree led by co-owners Behdad Eghbali and Todd Boehly, Chelsea signed 39 players over three years, but the team initially struggled to gel. However, under Maresca's management, Chelsea have emerged as serious title contenders, just four points behind leaders Liverpool.

Maresca, a former Leicester City boss, has been instrumental in shaping Chelsea’s young squad, which is the youngest in the Premier League with an average age of 23.4 years. The Italian manager’s connection with youth players, like his past work with Cole Palmer at Manchester City, made him a perfect fit for the role. Known for his engaging yet fair approach, Maresca commands respect in the dressing room. His leadership style combines warmth with a tough edge, as seen in his treatment of players like Reece James and Noni Madueke. Maresca publicly criticized James for his leadership qualities and dropped him from the starting lineup due to injuries, a decision that may have cost him the captaincy. Meanwhile, Madueke was benched after a poor training session, a move that led to an immediate response from the player, who scored a goal and provided an assist in Chelsea’s next match.

Maresca's ability to make tough decisions extended to the treatment of Raheem Sterling, whom he bluntly informed had no future at the club, resulting in Sterling’s loan move. In midfield, Maresca has excelled where Mauricio Pochettino failed last season. He has brought out the best in Moises Caicedo, and while Enzo Fernandez struggled at times, Maresca’s ability to balance the midfield with Romeo Lavia has helped improve the team's overall play.

A defining achievement of Maresca’s reign has been unifying a previously fractured squad. With so many new signings, Chelsea’s dressing room was in disarray last season. Maresca simplified the competition for spots by ensuring that two players compete for each position. This has created a healthy level of competition and clarity within the squad, while also boosting morale and performance.

As Chelsea's young squad continues to mature, their future looks promising. The management team, once ridiculed for their lack of football expertise, has taken a step back from the limelight and allowed Maresca to lead the team with confidence. Chelsea’s long-term plan is starting to take shape, and the club appears poised for sustained success.
