Nollywood producers weigh in on Netflix partnership challenges

The recent rumor about Netflix potentially exiting the Nigerian market has raised concerns among Nollywood producers, who see the platform as a critical player in promoting Nigerian stories globally. Although Netflix quickly refuted the claims, reaffirming its commitment to the Nigerian market and its investment in local content, the situation has prompted industry stakeholders to reflect on their experiences with the streaming giant.

Prominent filmmaker Lancelot Imasuen, known for his historical film Nvasion 1897, criticized Netflix's third-party acquisition model. Imasuen’s film was among the first ten Nigerian movies acquired by Netflix, but he believes the platform’s operational framework is restrictive for local content creators.

Though Netflix is a blessing to the industry, I have, however, queried the firm’s format of acquisition and working with Nigerians. I feel strongly that they concentrated on one end of the film industry. They should open their doors for content creators to deal with them directly, Imasuen said. He emphasized that democratizing access to Netflix would provide equal opportunities for filmmakers across Nigeria, allowing a broader spectrum of talent to shine.

He also addressed the commissioning of works, noting that while the practice is beneficial, it should be more inclusive. As for the commissioning of works, I feel that they should continue to commission works but democratize the process so that other filmmakers can showcase their talents, Imasuen added, highlighting the need for fairer access to resources and opportunities.

Echoing Imasuen’s sentiments, Alex Eyengho, a former president of the Association of Core Nollywood Producers (ANCOP), also called for direct engagement between Netflix and content creators. Eyengho argued that the current system, which heavily relies on intermediaries, often leaves many talented filmmakers marginalized. He suggested that a more open and collaborative approach could enhance Netflix’s impact on the Nigerian film industry.

Despite these concerns, Netflix has undeniably contributed to the growth of Nollywood, giving Nigerian films and series a global platform and creating new revenue streams for the industry. However, the call for a more inclusive and transparent relationship highlights the ongoing challenges of aligning global platforms with the diverse and dynamic Nigerian film market.

As Netflix continues to expand its footprint in Nigeria, producers hope the streaming giant will consider these concerns, fostering a more equitable partnership that benefits both the platform and the country’s thriving film industry.
