The Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has disclosed that he was poisoned as a result of his advocacy for the removal of Ken Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister. According to Appiah-Kubi, he faced severe persecution from individuals within his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to the point that his life was at risk.
"My government has pursued me in various ways following our advocacy. Let me state clearly that there was a time when my life was in danger. I fell ill during that period, but I was treated and fortunate enough to survive. I thank God for healing me over time—it truly was a miracle. I am very cautious now."
The lawmaker continued, explaining that the source of the attack was unclear:
"It’s like the air blowing—no one knows who is behind it. But I’ve suffered greatly because of my advocacy. It wasn't something that just passed; someone was hurt, and those aggrieved sought to punish me. The kind of punishment I endured… well, someone is speaking out in the media and naming names."
Appiah-Kubi also revealed that he was hospitalized for seven days, during which doctors confirmed that he had been poisoned.
He recounted his ordeal:
"God worked miraculously. I honestly don’t know how I survived. The last person I spoke to before I fell asleep was my PA. When the attack began, I struggled to grab my phone and call him. Thankfully, it was the last number I dialled, so it connected immediately. He and the NADMO director in my constituency rushed me to the hospital."
He continued:
"After that, I lost all memory. The next thing I heard was someone calling out, ‘Honourable.’ I replied, ‘Oh, it’s daylight now,’ only for the person to say, ‘This is the third day.’ I was stunned. Everything that happened during that time, including the poisoning, was later recounted to me."
On October 25, 2022, over 90 NPP MPs, led by Appiah-Kubi, held a press conference demanding the laying off of Ken Ofori-Atta due to his poor performance as Finance Minister. This followed the President’s fizzling out to respond to their earlier request for a meeting.
Two days after the press conference, the MPs met with President Akufo-Addo, and it was agreed that Ofori-Atta would be removed from his position after the completion of IMF negotiations.
However, it wasn't until 14 months later, on 14 February 2024, that Ken Ofori-Atta was reassigned from his role as Finance Minister to Senior Presidential Advisor on Finance and Special Envoy on International Investment and the Capital Markets.
Meanwhile, Andy Appiah-Kubi, who ran for re-election in 2024 under the NPP banner, was defeated by independent candidate Ohene Kwame Frimpong, a businessman and owner of Salt FM. Frimpong won decisively with 26,926 votes, compared to Appiah-Kubi's 8,933 votes. The NDC candidate, Kofi Asamoah, received 2,469 votes.
