The Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has recounted a harrowing experience following his leadership in the controversial #KenMustGo campaign, which called for the resignation of Ghana's former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta. According to the outgoing legislator, his bold stance against a member of his own party nearly cost him his life.
In an exclusive interview on JoyNews’ Upfront, Appiah-Kubi disclosed that his advocacy subjected him to what he described as "punishment," including an alleged poisoning incident that left him hospitalized.
Appiah-Kubi described the ordeal as a dark chapter in his political career, revealing that during his hospitalization, there were attempts to transfer him to a different facility in Accra, a decision his wife opposed.
"My own government pursued me in diverse ways after our advocacy, and that is a fact," he said. "At some point, my life was in danger. I suffered an ailment, got treated, and by the grace of God, I am still alive."
He explained that he had become unconscious during his illness and was unable to make decisions for himself. It was his wife’s refusal to allow the transfer that he credits with saving his life.
"There were attempts to lift me out of that hospital and bring me to Accra, but we were warned against that medium of travel," he recounted. "My wife stood her ground, and I stayed there for seven days. Somehow, God works miraculously, and I recovered."
His doctors later confirmed that he had been poisoned. Appiah-Kubi believes the incident was a consequence of his decision to challenge powerful figures within his party.
The #KenMustGo campaign, spearheaded by Appiah-Kubi and supported by approximately 80 New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs, sought the resignation of Ken Ofori-Atta amidst widespread criticism of his handling of Ghana's economy. The movement was seen as a rare act of defiance within the NPP, drawing both praise and condemnation.
The campaign highlighted Ghana's economic challenges, including high inflation and a depreciating cedi, which many attributed to the Finance Minister’s policies. Despite the public support for their stance, Appiah-Kubi and his colleagues faced backlash from within the party.
"Attacking people’s integrity is a dangerous enterprise," he noted, reflecting on the risks of his advocacy. "I have since been more alert. If you ask my personal assistant, he will tell you I don’t even eat outside anymore."
Appiah-Kubi also blamed the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections on what he described as the "recalcitrant posture" of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. He argued that the leadership's refusal to heed internal calls for change alienated voters and contributed to the NPP’s loss at the polls.
"The President's stance cost us dearly," he said. "It’s unfortunate that legitimate concerns raised by party members were ignored, leading to our heavy defeat."
Appiah-Kubi’s comments shed light on the internal struggles within the NPP, which many believe played a significant role in its poor performance in the elections. The MP’s experience serves as a stark reminder of the personal and professional risks involved in challenging the status quo.
For Appiah-Kubi, the ordeal has been a life-altering experience. He expressed gratitude to God for his recovery and acknowledged the support of American institutions for providing him with security assistance.
Reflecting on the incident, he said, "I got careless for a short period, but it won’t happen again. I am much more careful now."
The MP’s account has sparked widespread reactions, with many Ghanaians expressing shock and sympathy. It also raises questions about the safety of politicians who dare to speak out against their own parties.
Appiah-Kubi’s experience highlights the challenges of dissent within Ghana’s political landscape. While his leadership in the #KenMustGo campaign demonstrated courage, it also exposed the risks faced by those who challenge entrenched power structures.
The revelations about his poisoning and subsequent recovery underscore the need for greater protection for public officials who advocate for accountability and transparency. As Ghana navigates its political future, Appiah-Kubi’s story serves as both a cautionary tale and a call to action for reforms within the country’s political system.
The MP’s ordeal has also reignited discussions about the role of internal party dynamics in shaping governance and electoral outcomes. As the NPP reflects on its defeat, Appiah-Kubi’s testimony provides valuable insights into the consequences of ignoring internal dissent and the importance of fostering an inclusive and responsive political culture.
In the aftermath of the 2024 elections, Appiah-Kubi remains a polarizing figure, celebrated by some as a hero of accountability and vilified by others as a disruptor. Regardless of one’s perspective, his story has become a defining moment in Ghanaian politics, offering lessons on courage, resilience, and the high stakes of political advocacy.
