The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced that the parliamentary results for four constituencies - Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, and Tema Central - are illegal and cannot be upheld. This decision was made due to the re-collation process in these areas not following the laid-down procedures outlined in CI 127.
According to Samuel Tettey, Deputy EC Chair for Operations, the re-collation process was disrupted by party supporters who took over the centers and forced EC staff to declare results in favor of their preferred candidates. Despite the presence of police at the collation centers, the process was compromised, and EC officers were threatened into declaring winners without following the required procedures.
Tettey emphasized that the EC cannot uphold the collation and declarations made in these four constituencies, as they did not adhere to the processes outlined in CI 127. The commission has successfully completed the re-collation process in three other constituencies - Suhum, Akwatia, and Fanteakwa North - but is yet to conduct the process in Ahafo Ano South West, Ahafo Ano North, Obuasi East, and Techiman South.
The EC's decision is a significant development in Ghana's electoral process, highlighting the importance of adhering to established procedures to ensure the integrity of the elections. The commission's commitment to upholding the law and ensuring a fair electoral process is crucial in maintaining public trust and confidence in the democratic system.
In the context of Ghana's 2024 general elections, this decision serves as a reminder of the challenges and complexities involved in conducting free and fair elections. The EC's efforts to address these challenges and ensure a transparent electoral process are essential in promoting democracy and good governance in Ghana.
The EC's announcement has sparked mixed reactions from political parties and stakeholders, with some calling for further investigations into the disruptions and others commending the commission for upholding the law. As the electoral process continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how this development will impact the overall outcome of the elections. The EC's commitment to transparency and fairness will be closely watched in the coming days.
