Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has received widespread commendation for his exceptional security measures during Ghana’s December 7 elections. Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary, Nana Ohene Ntow, highlighted Dr. Dampare's strategic leadership as instrumental in maintaining peace and order amid potential unrest.
Speaking on TV3’s Key Points program on Saturday, December 14, Ohene Ntow attributed the country’s stability to Dampare's comprehensive security framework, which effectively mitigated risks during the polls. He acknowledged the immense pressure on the IGP but praised his unwavering resolve and professionalism.
“Ghanaians must commend Dampare for his efforts. His security arrangements and strategic planning saved this country from tipping over. Despite the actions of some rogue individuals within the military, Dampare remained steadfast, ensuring that only authorized deployments took place under his directive. His leadership has been a blessing to Ghana,” Ntow stated.
He further urged Ghanaians to celebrate leaders who go above and beyond, just as they hold underperformers accountable.
While Dr. Dampare has received accolades for his performance, some critics, including retired police officer ACP Dr. Benjamin Agordzo, have questioned his methods. However, Professor Ransford Gyampo, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, defended the IGP, describing the criticisms as baseless and unfair.
On Thursday, December 12, Prof. Gyampo lauded Dampare’s transformative leadership, which he believes has enhanced the reputation and effectiveness of the Ghana Police Service. “The criticism is unfortunate. Dr. Dampare has demonstrated resilience and fairness in his role, even in the face of significant challenges. His reforms have redefined policing in Ghana,” Gyampo remarked.
He credited Dampare with resisting external pressures and ensuring impartiality throughout the election period. Gyampo further highlighted the IGP’s decisive actions in preventing unauthorized military deployments, which could have exacerbated tensions at polling stations.
“This is a leader who has survived attempts to remove him for doing his job right. His boldness in standing firm against planned disruptions at voting centers deserves commendation. Dampare’s professionalism has earned praise across political divides,” Gyampo added.
Dr. Dampare’s leadership has garnered respect from civil society and religious organizations for promoting peace and stability during a critical moment in Ghana’s democratic journey. His insistence on fairness and adherence to the rule of law has set a new standard for law enforcement in the country.
As Ghana reflects on the elections, calls are growing for citizens and policymakers to support leaders like Dampare, who demonstrate a commitment to national unity and institutional integrity.
