Conflict Resolution in Marriages: Prioritizing Healing Over Separation
Couples in the Eastern Region of Ghana are being urged to prioritize resolving conflicts rather than rushing toward dissolving marriages. During a recent event, marriage counselors and experts highlighted the importance of open communication, forgiveness, and spiritual guidance in maintaining lasting and healthy relationships.
The call, led by experts from the Ghana News Agency event, comes amid growing concerns over the increasing rate of marital breakdowns in the region. Experts stressed that while disagreements are inevitable in any marriage, the way couples handle these conflicts determines the strength and longevity of their relationships.
Communication was identified as the cornerstone of conflict resolution. Many couples fall into the trap of silence, avoidance, or defensiveness, which can worsen misunderstandings. Marriage counselor Sarah Owusu explained, “The moment you stop talking to your partner is when the foundation of your marriage starts to crack. Healthy communication means listening to understand, not just to respond.”
Forgiveness also plays a critical role in maintaining a strong marriage. Holding on to resentment can erode trust and intimacy. Pastor Kwame Agyemang advised couples, “Forgiveness is not just for your partner, but for yourself. When you forgive, you free your mind and heart to rebuild love.” He added that embracing this mindset allows couples to heal together rather than drift apart.
Additionally, the event emphasized the importance of seeking spiritual guidance. Many couples were encouraged to turn to their faith and seek God’s wisdom when facing challenges. Pastor Agyemang noted, “Prayer and faith can offer strength and perspective during difficult times. Inviting God into your marriage can help you find peace and solutions that may not be obvious.”
Couples were urged not to fear seeking professional help, such as counseling, when conflicts seem insurmountable. The stigma surrounding marriage counseling still prevents many from getting the help they need. Experts emphasized that seeking help is a sign of strength and commitment, not weakness.
As divorce rates continue to climb, this call to action is a reminder that every marriage requires effort, patience, and compassion. Prioritizing conflict resolution over separation can help create more resilient families and communities.
