Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team, has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 general elections to a significant decline in voter turnout among the party’s supporters.

Speaking on Newsfile on December 14, Aboagye revealed that data from the elections pointed to a worrying drop in votes for the NPP in key regions, compared to previous years. He noted that in the Ahafo Region, for instance, the NPP’s votes fell from 145,000 in 2020 to 113,000 in 2024. In contrast, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) increased its votes in the region from 116,000 to 130,000.

Highlighting Greater Accra, a traditionally competitive region, Aboagye said, “In 2020, the NPP garnered 1,253,179 votes, but in 2024, we managed only 681,000, which is nearly half of our previous figure. This low turnout was a critical factor in our defeat.”

The NPP’s defeat has sparked introspection within the party, with many members calling for a review of campaign strategies and voter mobilization efforts.

Meanwhile, Alhassan Suhuyini, Member of Parliament for Tamale North, attributed the NPP’s loss to what he described as their poor governance, which left many Ghanaians frustrated. Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One News, Suhuyini criticized the NPP for failing to deliver on its promises, leading to voter dissatisfaction and a loss of confidence.

“Yes, the NPP’s performance in government was abysmal. Their leadership style provoked widespread frustration, and that anger translated into an endorsement for the NDC,” Suhuyini stated.

While acknowledging the victory of the NDC, Suhuyini emphasized the importance of reflecting on the expectations placed on the incoming administration. “The funfair surrounding this victory should be over by now. We must recognize the heavy responsibility entrusted to His Excellency the President and the NDC as a whole. The margin of victory is a clear indication of the high expectations Ghanaians have for us,” he said.

Suhuyini also warned the NDC against complacency, urging the party to prioritize delivering on its campaign promises. “This is a victory that calls for introspection. We must understand that the electorate’s endorsement was not just a rejection of the NPP but a call for us to perform better,” he added.

As both parties analyze the outcomes of the 2024 elections, the NPP is faced with the challenge of regaining the trust of its supporters, while the NDC must navigate the high expectations of Ghanaians.
