It looks as though there is heightened tension between the transition teams of the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) government and the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

The primary matter in question revolves around allegations of last-minute recruitments and payments by state agencies, which the NDC team has marked as unlawful. The incoming administration has raised concerns about recruitment activities within organizations such as the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ministry of the Interior, and the Electricity Company of Ghana, among others.

In response, the NPP government has rejected the denouncement, asserting that the recruitment is not unlawful.

On Friday, December 13, after the second day of meetings, the NDC transition team issued a press release, given a sign by its Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu. The release revealed that both sides had reached a mutual understanding regarding the last-minute recruitments and payments.

Ofosu stated:

"It was agreed that all ongoing significant payments, recruitments, and similar activities must be submitted to the Transition Team for consideration on a case-by-case basis. This will bring clarity to the status of these payments and recruitments and establish a framework for resolving the issues amicably."

However, the NPP transition team issued a counter-release, signed by its Spokesperson, Fatimatu Abubakar, presenting a different view.

The statement emphasized that the outgoing government’s tenure has not yet concluded, and therefore, the ongoing recruitments cannot be deemed illegal, as the NDC alleges.

"Regarding the concerns about ongoing recruitment and payments, it was noted that the government’s term expires at midnight on January 6, 2025. These recruitment processes and payments have received the necessary statutory approvals and have not been proven to be illegal."

The release further stated that any specific allegations of illegality regarding payments or recruitment should be brought to the Transition Committee for review.

Abubakar also urged the public to disregard the earlier statement issued by the NDC transition team.

"Please disregard any statements suggesting that the committee has decided all ongoing payments and recruitments should be referred to the transition team, as this does not reflect the meeting's records."

The contrasting statements have since generated mixed reactions from the public.

Meanwhile, President-elect John Dramani Mahama has called for transparency regarding the alleged last-minute recruitments, emphasizing the need for a smooth transition as his government prepares to assume power.
