Dr. Kobina Arthur Kennedy, a notable figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called for urgent reforms to strengthen the party and position it for victory in the 2028 elections. In an interview with GH One TV, Dr. Kennedy outlined the need for structural changes, including empowering grassroots members and reducing the role of money in political decision-making.
Reflecting on the NPP’s performance in the 2024 elections, Dr. Kennedy attributed the loss to a disconnect between the party’s leadership and its foundational principles. He emphasized that rebuilding the party requires a return to its core values of integrity, public service, and inclusivity.
“We need to rebuild the party and change the way we select our flagbearer. Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy was heavily influenced by wealthy interests and powerful individuals. This has created a perception of him being part of a corrupt system that protects vested interests,” Dr. Kennedy remarked.
One of his key proposals is the democratization of the party’s internal processes. He argued that every card-carrying member of the NPP should have the right to vote in the selection of leaders, ensuring grassroots representation and inclusivity.
“Allowing every member to vote will ensure that the leadership truly represents the people’s choice, not just those with financial clout or political influence,” he noted.
Dr. Kennedy also stressed the need to reduce the influence of money in politics, stating that monetization has eroded the party’s credibility and diverted its focus from serving the public to protecting private interests.
“The purpose of governance should be public service, not looting state resources. We must emphasize humility, accountability, and a genuine commitment to the people,” he explained.
Drawing on the party’s history, Dr. Kennedy lamented the decline in leadership quality compared to its founding days. He recalled how the NPP was initially built on sacrifice and intellectual contributions, with members taking personal loans to support the party’s growth.
“The founders of this party pledged their fortunes and ideas to establish a credible alternative for Ghanaians. Today, we see a stark contrast in leadership priorities,” he observed.
Dr. Kennedy highlighted the need to nurture leaders who prioritize public service over personal gain. He also pointed to the exemplary leadership of past figures like Donkoh Fordjour, who led with integrity and vision, as a benchmark for the party’s revival.
In conclusion, Dr. Kennedy urged the NPP to realign with its foundational values and make bold reforms to regain public trust. “Our credibility and future depend on these changes,” he stated.
