In a significant step towards improving the education of schoolchildren in South Tongu, Citi FM Foundation and Channel One TV have generously donated two canoes to help address transportation challenges faced by students in the Bludo area. The donation is a direct response to a report by Citi News, which shed light on the difficulties schoolchildren had been facing while trying to cross the river to reach the Torkpo community for their education.
For years, the children in this rural community relied on damaged and unsafe boats to navigate the river, a situation that put their safety at risk and limited their access to education. With these obstacles hindering the children's journey to school, the local community and education officials had been searching for solutions to ensure the children could continue their studies without disruption.
The Citi FM Foundation, upon learning of the plight of these children, quickly mobilized resources and allocated a substantial sum of GH¢10,000 to build two new canoes. These canoes are now set to provide a safe and reliable means of transportation, ensuring that students from Bludo can cross the river with ease and reach their school in Torkpo without the challenges they once faced.
The District Director of Education for South Tongu, Celestine Sewornam Korsi-Agordo, expressed her profound gratitude to Citi FM Foundation and Channel One TV for their timely and impactful contribution. She emphasized how vital this assistance was to the children, noting that it would help remove one of the many barriers to education that they had been enduring.
"I am extremely happy that you fulfilled your promise to assist these children," said Korsi-Agordo. "If we had more people like you who honor their promises and are committed to community development, our society would be a better place."
While the donation of the canoes has been a major boost for the schoolchildren, the District Director of Education highlighted that the community still needs further support. She made a heartfelt appeal to Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), philanthropists, and the government to extend more help, especially towards the education sector. Her call was focused on acquiring additional learning materials, such as textbooks, school uniforms, sandals, and other essential items that would ensure the children had everything they needed to succeed academically.
In her plea, she stressed the importance of investing in the future of these children, many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds and have faced significant hardships in their pursuit of education. “We call on all stakeholders to come to our aid so that we can give these children the education they deserve and prepare them for a brighter future,” she added.
The assembly member for the Torsukpo electoral area, Michael Tetteh, also expressed his gratitude for the donation. He emphasized that the canoes would go a long way in improving access to education in the region. Tetteh explained that these canoes would not only solve a transportation problem but also help create better opportunities for the children, ensuring that no child would be left behind due to the geographical challenges they face.
“The canoes will ensure no child is left behind. They will attend school regularly and achieve their future aspirations,” said Tetteh. His statement echoed the sentiments of many in the community who believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and improving the overall well-being of the region.
This generous contribution by Citi FM Foundation and Channel One TV has been hailed as a model for corporate social responsibility and community involvement. The positive impact of this gesture is not only seen in the improved access to education but also in the sense of hope it has instilled in the local community.
For many of the children who previously had to endure unsafe crossings, these new canoes represent much more than just a means of transportation—they are a lifeline that allows them to attend school, learn, and dream of a better future.
The donation is part of Citi FM Foundation’s ongoing commitment to supporting education and community development in Ghana’s rural areas. By tackling critical issues such as transportation, which directly affects children’s ability to attend school, the foundation is helping to ensure that education is accessible to all, regardless of where they live.
As this initiative continues to garner support and recognition, it serves as a reminder of the power of community partnerships and the difference that can be made when organizations, both public and private, come together to address the challenges facing vulnerable communities.
The future of the children in South Tongu now looks a little brighter, thanks to the combined efforts of Citi FM Foundation and Channel One TV. The community is hopeful that this is just the beginning of a greater effort to improve education and provide lasting solutions to the challenges faced by rural schoolchildren across Ghana.
This donation of two canoes is not just a small act of charity; it is a transformative gesture that could inspire similar initiatives in other regions, sparking a wave of support for rural education and helping to ensure that no child in Ghana is left behind due to geographical or logistical barriers.
