Denzel Washington apologizes
Denzel Washington may have let a major detail slip during a recent interview.
While promoting his latest film, Gladiator II, the Oscar-winning actor spoke with Australia’s Today show about his illustrious career and upcoming projects. Washington, known for his discerning choice of roles, emphasized his commitment to working with top-tier talent.
At this point in my career, I’m only interested in working with the best, he said, before revealing details about future roles. Among them, Washington confirmed his next project following his upcoming Broadway stint in Shakespeare’s Othello, where he will portray the titular character.
After Othello, I’m playing Hannibal. After that, I’ve been talking with Steve McQueen about a film, he shared. Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther.
The mention of a new Black Panther film caught many by surprise, as Marvel Studios has yet to officially announce a third installment in the franchise. Washington’s comment immediately generated buzz, raising questions about whether he inadvertently disclosed confidential plans.
During a subsequent appearance on Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, Washington addressed the situation and expressed regret for speaking out of turn. He also took the opportunity to praise Coogler, the visionary writer-director behind the Black Panther films.
I called him and apologized for talking about the movie, Washington said. And right there sitting with him was his beautiful wife.
Despite the slip-up, Washington couldn’t help but admire Coogler’s talent. He’s still Ryan, humble and full of ideas. Whatever he writes, I’ll read, he added.
This potential collaboration between Washington and Coogler has fans excited, as it marks a union of two highly respected figures in Hollywood. Coogler, celebrated for his storytelling and direction, would be writing a role for one of the most iconic actors of his generation.
Meanwhile, Washington’s other projects also promise to be significant milestones. His upcoming portrayal of Hannibal, the legendary Carthaginian general, has already sparked interest among fans who are eager to see his interpretation of the historical figure.
As for Black Panther, the franchise remains a cultural touchstone in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly following the success of the first two films and the legacy of the late Chadwick Boseman. While Marvel has yet to confirm Washington’s involvement or a third installment, his comments suggest that early development might already be underway.
For now, Washington’s plate is full, with Othello and other ambitious projects keeping him at the forefront of Hollywood’s most anticipated productions. Fans will be eager to see how these projects unfold, especially if his potential role in the Black Panther universe comes to fruition.
