Andy Appiah-Kubi, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, has made a shocking revelation that he was poisoned after leading the #KenMustGo campaign, which advocated for the removal of Ken Ofori-Atta as Ghana's Finance Minister. Appiah-Kubi disclosed that he faced severe persecution from within his own party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which put his life in danger.
In an interview with Joy News, Appiah-Kubi shared his harrowing experience, stating that he was hospitalized for seven days after being poisoned. He recounted how his personal assistant and the NADMO director in his constituency rushed him to the hospital after he struggled to call for help. Appiah-Kubi expressed gratitude to God for his miraculous recovery, adding that he has become more cautious and vigilant since the incident.
The #KenMustGo campaign was launched in October 2022, with over 90 NPP Members of Parliament, led by Appiah-Kubi, demanding Ofori-Atta's dismissal due to his poor performance as Finance Minister. Although President Akufo-Addo initially agreed to relieve Ofori-Atta of his duties after completing IMF negotiations, it took 14 months for the Minister to be reshuffled to a new role.
Appiah-Kubi's poisoning allegation has raised concerns about the safety and security of lawmakers who dare to challenge their party's leadership. The incident has also sparked debate about the culture of intimidation and retaliation within Ghana's political landscape.
In a related development, Appiah-Kubi lost his parliamentary seat in the 2024 elections to an independent candidate, Ohene Kwame Frimpong. Despite this setback, Appiah-Kubi remains committed to speaking truth to power and advocating for good governance in Ghana.
The poisoning attempt on Appiah-Kubi's life serves as a stark reminder of the risks and challenges faced by lawmakers who dare to challenge the status quo. As Ghana continues to navigate its democratic journey, it is essential to ensure the safety and security of all citizens, including lawmakers who are committed to serving the public interest.
