Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, the outgoing Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, has called on President-elect John Mahama to establish a committee to investigate the allocation and distribution of public lands in Ghana. Speaking on GHOne TV, Mr. Appiah-Kubi raised concerns over the management of public resources and emphasized the need for accountability and integrity in leadership.
Mr. Appiah-Kubi criticized the opaque nature of public land distribution, urging the incoming government to prioritize an investigation.
“I request the setting up of a committee to investigate all public lands and their distribution,” he stated.
He expressed concerns about the misuse of power in public office, highlighting a cultural tendency toward mismanagement and exploitation of public property.
“People become too pompous with power and misapply or misuse public space, funds, and property. Let’s move away from such behavior,” he added.
The outgoing MP also proposed a comprehensive review of all natural resource contracts in Ghana. According to him, the country's poor resource management has led to significant losses, undermining efforts to alleviate poverty.
“The way to get out of poverty is to look back at what we are losing, stop the looting, and benefit from our resources,” he remarked.
He further questioned the logic of giving away valuable natural resources for minimal returns, urging reforms to ensure Ghanaians benefit equitably from the nation’s wealth.
Mr. Appiah-Kubi called for a shift in leadership philosophy, urging public officials to prioritize service over personal gain.
“We don’t make money in government; let’s make money in the private sector,” he stated.
His remarks underscore the need for ethical governance and a culture of accountability to restore public trust in resource management.
As Ghana transitions to a new administration, Mr. Appiah-Kubi’s recommendations serve as a crucial reminder of the importance of transparency and integrity in public resource management. Whether these proposals will translate into actionable policies remains to be seen, but they highlight pressing issues that require immediate attention.
