Fishermen Council Congratulates Mahama, Vows Support for Fishing Industry

The Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council (GNCFC) has extended its congratulations to John Dramani Mahama on his victory as president-elect. The council expressed optimism that Mahama’s return to office will herald significant improvements in the fishing industry, a sector critical to the livelihoods of thousands of Ghanaians.

In a statement issued shortly after the declaration of results, the GNCFC noted that the fishing community has long grappled with challenges such as dwindling fish stocks, illegal fishing practices, and lack of modern infrastructure. The council believes that with renewed government support and strategic reforms, these challenges can be addressed under Mahama's leadership.

The council emphasized the need for a collaborative relationship with the new administration, stating, “We are ready to work closely with President-elect John Mahama to ensure sustainable practices and better conditions for our hardworking fishermen.” They also highlighted the importance of policy changes to protect local fishing rights and improve market conditions.

Over the years, Ghana’s fishing industry has faced numerous issues, including overfishing by foreign trawlers and the rising cost of fishing equipment. The GNCFC is hopeful that Mahama's presidency will prioritize the enforcement of fishing regulations and provide financial support to improve the sector's infrastructure.

John Mahama, who previously served as Ghana's president from 2012 to 2017, has promised to revive key sectors of the economy, including fisheries. During his campaign, he pledged to introduce initiatives aimed at boosting local production, enhancing safety measures for fishermen, and promoting sustainable fishing practices.

The GNCFC also called on the incoming government to address the problem of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, which continues to threaten the livelihoods of local fishermen. The council believes that by working hand-in-hand with the government, they can develop strategies to curb these harmful practices.

As Mahama prepares to assume office, the council expressed hope that his government will honor commitments to support the fishing communities and invest in education, training, and modern technology for fishermen. This, they believe, will ensure a thriving and sustainable industry for future generations.

The congratulatory message concluded with an invitation to Mahama to meet with representatives of the fishing community to discuss immediate needs and long-term goals.
